Hello!
A more sensible navigation approach

Old News 2001: Mar 4 - May 29
29 May @ 2:31 p.m.

For the Niemworks faithful (Bless both of you!) here's a sneak peek at the new navigation.

Also, in case I somehow missed shouting to you about my Seattle trip, here's some photos.

Time for a new navigation/redesign. Look at that thing up there. Very hard to figure out. Very ugly and I can do better. I am gonna slimpify the pants off of it. Come to think of it, the whole site needs a facelift. I might not be updating for a while.

Here are some new reasons David Choe impresses me: a crazy-ass Batgirl painting, and his super-crude, super-wise words. Choe deserves every bit of praise he's getting because the man takes chances like they were free furniture.

Hell yes!!! Seattle this Friday for the big Chris Ware and Dan Clowes show at Roq la Rue. I am one lucky comics fan.

Happy Birthday to me and my brother Doan! We had a nice little celebration last Saturday with some of our friends, and even our little brother Thomas came up. Thanks one and all for making the shindig a success. I am very sorry I wasn't able to invite more people, but I wanted to keep the gathering as intimate as possible. Plus, I paid for all the food myself, and Baja Fresh for 20 people ain't the cheapest thing. But dang tasty!

This week's comics, "Jennifer," is up. Also, new sketches: #'s 53 and 54 this time.

Some new New City's arrived the other day, and boy, it was a crackerjack of a treat to see Alex Ross's rendition of Chris Ware's Superman and Jimmy Corrigan.

Charming!

Stepping lively along Market St in the city today I came across three large, gorgeous old master copies on the sidewalk, forcing me to stop. Each was about maybe 5' x 5', with nice figure and color work. They were done with pastel on canvas, and the lettering was done right on the ground, very classy serif lettering.

And that is how I met Jacques, a sidewalk painter for the last 20 years who's lived in Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Rome to name just a few places. I had a very pleasant conversation with him for over an hour; he seemed like a good person with lots of interesting experiences. He mentioned that he's a Christian, ahd this was his way of communicating the gospel. As someone interested in religion, I found it admirable and fascinating that Jacques put his passion in such a beautiful visual form.

He also mentioned Kurt Wenner, the cream of the street painting crop. Pretty marvelous stuff, I must say.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share that fun encounter. I hope to bump into Jacques again at the Palo Alto Art Center's figure drawing sessions, which I mentioned to him, since he lives in the area.

New comics and sketches are up. As always, enjoy, if possible.

Gadzooks! Jim Woodring sent me back my postcard with his kind words, and a sketch of some weird "funny animal" face. :) I humbly thank you sir! It's great to get your encouragement.

I am also pleased to report that the new weekly comic is up! It marks yet another approach at this struggle. "Eva" is fiction. Also, I have some brand-new sketches up, including some R. Crumb sketchbook copies that are reminding me to have more fun with drawing. This brings the count of sketches to 50. Woo-hoo!

Frank!

9 Apr @ 10:01 p.m.

No new comics this week, and no more apologies about it. Instead, I have been working full-time on putting up the new bio, resumé, and portfolio sections. I also put up two life drawings.

Saturday I spent in San Francisco with Jason Garcia and Amy. We saw Nancy Cartwright at Borders as part of her booksigning tour. A lot of fun! About 120 people came to see and hear the voice of Ralph Wiggum, Nelson Muntz, and Bart Simpson, among others. Interesting that she's also a Scientologist, it turns out. She didn't mention it in her book, or in person though. I gave her a copy of my comic, and on the off-chance that she arrives to this site because of it, I just want to say thanks Nancy, for contributing to my good humor over these past twelve years or so.

This week's batch of comics is just the first panel in an experimental, longer narrative. I am not sure how long the whole thing will run, but I do know that it's intended for mature audiences. Stay tuned every week if you want to see me draw adult female nudity. I had to get rid of this panel because I realized it was a clunky idea, and I lost interest in it.

By week's end, look for my "Professional Work" section, which will have my web portfolio and resumé. I also figured out what was causing that funky looking navigation bar in Netscape, so that shall be fixed. Finally, I've been going to Palo Alto Art Center's figure drawing sessions and will have some of those drawings in my sketches section soon.

Sunday: 25 Mar @ 6:18 p.m.

I was going to put up the panels I have for this week, but they're way too uninteresting. Darnit, my first missed batch. I must work harder. Here are four new sketches to try to distract us from the pain.

I happened upon the Discovery Channel's Neanderthal documentary last night. Pretty cool, especially in light of my recent musings about cavemen, and how fearful they must have been.

Neanderthal: Check it out if it airs again.
Monday: 19 Mar @ 3:00 a.m.

You bet your butt that the latest comic is up. The coloring fun continues.

Also, people have pointed out that the navigation looks funky. But as far as I can tell, that's only the case in Netscape. So for best results, please use IE, and maximize that window. Thanks.

11 Mar @ 11:31 p.m.

Hello again. I am experimenting with adding more color to this site, to take advantage of the web. The latest batch of comics is up, and can be seen here. I also put up some new sketches.

5 Mar @ 3:45 a.m.

Sorry if you are on my Niemworks mailing list and received double copies of the newsletter I just sent out. I am not sure what happened. My proofreading could've been better too. My bad. See what happens when you try to promote yourself at 3 in the morning?

4 Mar @ 4:30 a.m.

Okey-dokey, here finally is the navigation redesign, along with a new ambition to produce some comics for you, loyal reader, every week. I will do my best to deliver the goods.

This week, you can find the contents of our mini-comic: YES & NO #1. Enjoy if possible, and I apologize for the miniscule size on some of the lettering. But I hope you get the idea anyway.

Let me know what you think of all this if you have a second.
