APE 2002: One Hour at the Alternative Press Expo.

Cristina and I arrived late on Saturday, with just 60 minutes before closing. But we still managed to get some great comics, and take some pics. Captions in italics are by Cristina.

Jason Shiga, the happiest cartoonist in the world.

Jason is indeed a kick to be around, and one of the most innovative small pressers out there. His newest work is FLEEP.

92K

Raina Lee and John Pham

Raina debuted 1-UP, her fiendish zine about video game culture, while John charmed this jerk with his EpoxyPress line of comics and toys.

50K

The talented Martin Cendreda has my gratitude for following the sorry exploits of Niemworks so diligently. He makes mini-comics, and flash cartoons too, click on his name and "new toons" to see. I enjoyed his contributions to 1-UP megazine.

102K

Raina and Cristina. 2 REALLY cute girls. even better looking in person!

74K

"i'm a lucky, lucky man," apparently

110K

dave choe, mylan, and "the guy who goes to all dave choe's shows"

It made me blush to overhear one of the gawkers behind us whispering, "Shit, that's the Niemworks guy with two fans"

85K

Ryohei Tanaka makes Special Blend, his addictive mini-comics zine thing that look like 3 or 4 different people put it together. Features some weird cut-out silhouettes.

68K

Tomer Hanuka, visiting from the East Coast. He and brother Assaf are responsible for Bipolar. His illustration work is not shabby either.

53K

You bet your ass that's Jordan Crane, the man whose Last Lonely Saturday makes all the fine, smart women cry. Cristina managed to snag the last NON #5 of that Saturday.

54K

Ron Regé Jr is an incomparable cartoonist with great taste. He turned me on to Greg Cook's "Hear-Say" at last year's APE

50K

The first thing I read when I got home was Renée French's new book, The Soap Lady. I had been ready to go to sleep, but it kept me awake and turning the pages.

44K

Adrian Tomine tries to tell me, "Wait, I didn't make the awesomeDrawn & Quarterly sign, Seth did!" But it's too late, the photo is taken and that's it.

59K

John Pham's handmade toy of his "Jack" character, made outta epoxy resin. I pretended to not care, but deep inside, I was ready to kick his ass

46K

Scott is a swanky writer guy, and fellow friend of Shiga

93K

A cartoon show at the Gallery Balazo that evening had some sweaty and smelly rooms, but it was almost worth it to see this big Ron Rege wall drawing

74K

Jordan Crane also had this big poster at the gallery. It must be the one he made for a big comics festival in Portugal last year
